The destructive fires of 2007, apart from the irreparable human losses, left behind incalculable material damages, extensive damage to the natural environment, significant disruption to the financial life of many prefectures in Greece, and placed a heavy responsibility on all Greek citizens to become active and avert, or at least minimize, such destruction in the future.
The John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and Eurobank EFG, true to the principles of social compassion and solidarity, inspired and cultivated by their founder, John S. Latsis, mobilized immediately. With a high sense of duty towards suffering fellow-citizens, and in collaboration with the Greek State, an independent programme was swiftly implemented in order to restore the fire-stricken regions, to provide afflicted citizens with financial support, to strengthen the national and volunteer forest protection mechanisms, and to restore the natural environment. The programme, entitled 'It is Our Duty', runs for a total of 3 years and will extend over the whole of Greece, concentrating, however, on the prefectures heavily stricken by fire and in particular on Ileia Prefecture.
